My first post explains why I started this blog but I wanted to share a little bit more about me, so here goes!

Some facts about me in no particular order:
I'm Alison Higgins.
I'm in my 30s.
I was born and raised in Philly and I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
I am married to my best friend, we have two sons and two pups (that's Ruger above with me). 
My family and friends are my whole world.
I love to shop.
I have too many hobbies and struggle to focus on one at a time. Among other reasons, this made my late-ADHD diagnosis not very shocking.
A hot bath and a good book is my idea of a good time.
I used to love going out with my friends, but now I'm old(er)... and tired all the time.
I watch too much tv - I love complex dramas and horrible reality tv.
I love Harry Potter. A lot. But each year I learn that I completely disagree with J.K. on a lot. Trans women are women is all I’ll say about that (though it should not have to be said at all). 
I'm drawn to true crime stories. Saying I'm a "fan" just feels wrong.
I love photography, especially getting to capture things that other people overlook.

This post contains affiliate links. For more details, see my disclosure  here . A spy novel, written by a former spy... This one didn't take much convincing. I was on board immediately. The parts that I enjoyed, I really, really enjoyed but unfortunately the parts that I didn't enjoy outweighed them by a bit. Juliet Arroway is a force to be reckoned with, and after being dealt several tough blows throughout her life, she's still fighting for the greater good.  I'm in no way opposed to a love story sub-plot in a spy novel, but it really felt like the Juliet of the love story and the Juliet who is a strong, intelligent, competent spy were two different people. She seems to fall just short of swooning on many occasions and given the stakes of her job, it was a bit jarring to jump from a scene of intense action to her innermost thoughts about her love life. The Weight by Jeff Boyd

Julian is a twenty something, plays drums in a rock band, lives in Portland, has a solid group of friends with whom he has many things in common. The exception of course is that his friends are all white and Julian is black. As the band inches towards success, Julian flails in a way that is uniquely his own as he navigates work, relationships, and reckoning with his religious upbringing’s effect on his decidedly not religious adulthood as a black man in a predominantly white city.  The Weight is a phenomenal character study that still manages to have an interesting plot and does not drag on too long. It’s full of interesting scenarios and even more interesting people. This is the type of book that stays with you after you’re done. 33 - The Stowaway by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth

[WARNING!! This post contains spoilers - read on at your own risk!] I really liked the premise but was unprepared for the level of graphic descriptions of the various crimes committed throughout.   I wasn’t a fan of the time jumps. I think the background info that was established during them could have been accomplished another way. It also contributed to the beginning feeling really rushed.  Maria was a tough character for me. I found her slightly sympathetic but I felt like she lacked depth, particularly as it pertains to her professional life. A lot of her reactions felt like they would not have come from an accomplished academic, until she miraculously is able to use her training to understand how Butler ticks and save the day.  I’m never one to figure out the twist in advance and this was no exception, though it did end up being one of the theories I had along the way, which is rare.  Overall, it was a quick read and despite my critiques, I still needed to know how it ended.  Than
